I have yet to sit in her chair but the buzz behind the styles of Kia Sterling is all over Philly and the NYC. As the senior stylist at one of the most popular Beauty Salons in Philly, Kia Sterling is the lady that people want to see for a super model look. As the senior stylist for Philly Fashion Week of 2012, she created magnificent styles that complimented the looks of each designer, caught the attention of many viewers that began to create a buzz about the super chic stylist.
I had the chance to chat it up with my new fashionista, Kia and we talked about her experience as the head stylist for Philly Fashion Week, her work in NY and what we can expect from her in the years to come. Needless to say, I will be in her chair very soon...
Who is Kia Sterling?
A woman who loves GOD, a believer, and adores my family. I am a loyal friend, hard worker, creative thinker, social butterfly, down to earth, lover of all things beautiful, and loves to laugh really, really hard.
What were you interests before hair care/styling?
Believe it or not, I wanted to become a professional ballerina. I started training at the world renowned PHILADANCO in Philadelphia at a very young age in ballet, point, tap, jazz, gymnastics, and modern dance. Dance was my first love and I still love it today.
When did you decide to become a stylist?
When I was a teenager. I realized that I could do what I love doing and make a great living at it. I never feel like I'm working, just enjoying one long fabulous party.
Who is your favorite type of client?
Someone who is open-minded, daring, and loves and appreciates beautiful hair and great personalized service.
What do you want your clients to gain from an experience with you?
Falling in love with their hair by creating the best hair their hair can be. Offering lots of vital information on healthy hair care and scalp care, understanding their hair texture, product knowledge, tips, tricks. Lots of personality and fun personalized service. I even share my personal beauty and fashion tips that I'm so often asked.
What trends do you love?
The Ombre color technique, I also love extremely exaggerated looks such as: long waist length extensions, big textured hair, disconnected structured short cuts, loose french braids and fishtails, modern crimps, free flowing hair with lots of movement that gives off a bedhead feel will always be a fav of mine. I'm highly influenced by European styling especially in my session work.
What trends do want to end?
The straight back braids style for men. It’s a very dated look but I'm still seeing it regularly.
Tell us about your experience as the head stylist at Philly Fashion Week...
AMAZING!! I love the opportunity to create on a different plateau. I'm so thankful to have connected to some of the most amazing people and artist in Philadelphia's fashion industry, especially my hairstyling team. I feel extremely blessed to work with such a talented, fun and amazing group of hairstylist.
How do you come up with the styling ideas to match the designer's ideas?
Meeting, chatting, with the designers and studying their esthetic, studying the international runway trends, and adding my own personal touch aids me in creating the runway hair that speaks to all the designer's esthetic and story.
What can we expect from you in the next five years?
Becoming the 8th Wonder of the World… LOL… and creating a whole lot of phenomenal hair. My list of goals grows daily.
Tell us about your salon and recent business endeavors...
I'm a senior stylist at the trendy AnBrea's Beauty Salon in Philadelphia's East Falls section. As a session and salon hair artist in Philadelphia and New York, my schedule is super hectic but I'm thankful I'm able to live and experience the best of both worlds. Working with my fabulous salon clients who I love dearly (they are an extension of my family) keeps me grounded. I just finished working on Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC, and also had the opportunity to work with some amazing designer's on their look books, such as BlacMera for STYLE360 Elle Magazine. Worked on lots of photo shoots for magazine editorials (You can see my latest editorial "MUTED" on Italian Vogue's website). Stay tuned for lots more magazine editorials, amazing projects, educational workshops on editorial styling and session work, and my latest hair collection coming soon.
What makes Kia Sterling "Young, Hip and Chic"?
I live for my motto: EVOLVE, INSPIRE, CREATE, and SHARE with everyone. Creativity drives me, ordinary is never an option. I'm finally beginning to live my professional dream and that makes my heart happy.
