Tame and Restrained, Baby Phat Celebrates a Decade

Kimora Lee Simmons celebrated 10 years of Baby Phat at her show on Friday night, Sept. 12, with a seventies-inspired Spring 2009 collection of jersey dresses and flared jumpsuits that showed a more restrained side of Simmons.
Even the level of calm at Roseland Ballroom, where the show was held, signaled an older, wiser Baby Phat. A loudspeaker politely intoned people to "Please take your seats," and no catfights broke out over stolen swag. One woman had to be carried out by security kicking and screaming, but that was well before most people had arrived. 
Still, per Simmons' fashionably fabulous style, the show, titled "Decade," started over an hour late. Most VIP's like Ice-T and his wife Coco and U.S. Open winner Serena Williams came at the last minute, but it was Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley who held up the proceedings in the end. Breezing in just past 8 p.m., when Talley sat down the show immediately began.
Judging by the menswear, Baby Phat boyfriends have also been reined in and tamed. Relaxed, baggy suits, graphic print tanks, brightly colored shorts and khaki or camouflage shirts and jackets were the primary looks. More flashy were the shoes - gold and silver Wallabee boots with black piping.
I am in LOVE with her new line which is totally awesome!!! I really think that the new collection is totally Young, Hip, and Chic. I like the way that the clothes are less revealing and chic at the same time. I would really wear one of those outfits because they are inspired by one of my favorite times...the Seventies! Though seventies-era Cher was the beauty inspiration - models wore stick-straight parted down the middle hair, by Odile Gilbert, and wide, open eyes line with both upper and lower false lashes, none of Cher's wildest fashion moments turned up as inspiration on the Baby Phat runway, aside from some ridiculous fringed vests that recalled Cher's Pocahontas moments.
Turns out that for Simmons, the opposite of excess is the most radical statement she can make at this point in her career. Her first look, a short bronze sequined dress with sexy draped back was the type of glam get-up for which Baby Phat is known, but that was the only such piece.
Instead, Simmons focused mostly on wearable looks such as jersey dresses, denim flares, vests and demure floral painted silk dresses. Simmons has always loved a jumpsuit, so there were also plenty of those, and this season she'll be right on trend with that look. Shoes consisted of strappy python embossed platform sandals with mirrored talon-like heels or stilettos with patent leather-covered heels.
